Publishers bet
Sentinel Publisher Sarah O. Wilson is betting Gary Blackburn, publisher of The Princeton Daily Clarion, that the Rochester Zebras will beat the Princeton Tigers in Saturday's Class 3A state basketball title game.

The winner will receive a donation to their high school's library.

"Great idea. I accept," Gary Blackburn said. "I will ask our librarian for a list of books they might enjoy, or a copy of the movie 'Hoosiers.'"

An official presentation between Blackburn and Wilson will be made during the next Hoosier State Press Association meeting in January.

Princeton Bosse Round 1

Posted by sidebottompaul | Posted in | Posted on 11:03 AM

Princeton-Bosse rivalry is building

Tigers win this round on Simmons' foul shots

It may have been Princeton High School's third game of the season and Bosse's second, but the electric atmosphere made Friday's basketball contest seem more like a sectional title was on the line.
With most of the crowd standing, Jordan Simmons hit two free throws with three seconds left to seal the Tigers' 71-68 victory at the Dog House. "We had to win this game because it was an important game and because of the crowd, too," said Simmons, a junior guard who was 5-for-6 from the line in scoring 12 points.
Princeton principal Jon Abbey estimated that nearly 800 Tigers' fans made the 30-mile trip to Bosse.
"We couldn't let them down, so I hit the free throws," Simmons said.
The Princeton-Bosse rivalry began to develop markedly last season after Bosse defeated the Tigers in the championship game of the Toyota Classic at Fort Branch and Princeton returned the favor in the Class 3A Boonville Sectional.
"We get them again in the Toyota Classic (this season)," Simmons said. "They talked a lot of stuff before the game. We came out and played hard."
Anthony Quarles hit a 17-footer from the left corner to give Bosse a 66-64 lead with 38 seconds showing.
Princeton's Jalen Packer missed a pair of foul shots with 23 seconds left, but Princeton's Rontray Chavis forced a jump ball with Brandon Darrett and the possession arrow was in the Tigers' favor. Packer inbounded to Rontray Chavis, who made the layup and an ensuing free throw to give Princeton a 67-66 advantage with 20 seconds to play.
Quarles hit a pair of foul shots to put the Bulldogs back in front, 68-67, with 12 seconds remaining. Simmons made the first free throw to tie the score, but missed the second with seven seconds left.
Dontray Chavis, Rontray's twin, grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He hit the first free throw to give Princeton a 69-68 lead, but missed the second with seven seconds still showing. A Princeton player tipped the ball back to Dontray Chavis. He passed to Simmons, whose free throws increased the Tigers' lead to three.
From just behind the halfcourt line, Quarles' 3-point attempt bounced harmlessly off the backboard before time expired.
Rontray Chavis poured in a game-high 25 points forPrinceton (3-0). Stanley Trice came off the bench to score 17 points for the Bulldogs (1-1).
"My kids grew up tonight," said first-year Bosse coach Shane Burkhart. "They didn't lose the game; coach Burkhart lost the game."
He said he didn't remind his players to block out on the late free throws.
"They left everything they had on the floor," Burkhart said. "They played with heart and passion. What a phenomenal effort. What a great rivalry."
Princeton coach Tom Weeks said both teams made big plays at big moments.
"We had to hit some key free throws at the end and we did that," he said. "We had some key rebounds. We had some young guys come up big. There is no quit in these guys and Bosse played a tremendous game."
Bosse plays Tuesday at Memorial. Princeton hosts Mount Carmel on that night.

Different motivations for Princeton Community and Gibson Southern basketball girls in Thursday night games, the Lady Tigers at Boonville and the Lady Titans at home against Mount Vernon.

Princeton, fresh from Saturday's 67-50 win over visiting Mount Carmel, will seek to win four straight games for the first time since January 1999, when Bethany Miller led the Lady Tigers to five straight wins.

The fourth of those five straight came 59-55 at Evansville North on Jan. 23, 1999, following wins of 63-62 over North Posey, 66-48 over Southridge and 71-66 over Pike Central. No. 5 came 89-88 in three overimes Jan. 26, 1999, at Vincennes Lincoln, before the streak ended two nights later against Jasper.

The current Lady Tigers own a 4-3 record after successively beating Wood Memorial, Mount Vernon and Mount Carmel. Sophomore forward Dakota Hack led the latter win with a career-high 20 points. Senior center Shantel McKee authored 17 points and 10 rebounds, freshman guard Raven Greer 10 points and 6 assists.

A Thursday win would give coach Jim Thompson's team a 3-0 Big Eight Conference record and the league lead entering 2009.

Boonville owns a 2-4 record with bookend wins, 53-32 at Evansville Central in its season opener and 66-49 over Evansville Reitz its last game. In between, the Lady Pioneers lost 49-34 to Princeton victim Southridge, 66-40 to 3A No. 5-ranked Evansville Memorial, 61-47 to Evansville Mater Dei and 52-42 to Castle.

The Lady Tigers, at home, beat Boonville 43-40 last December after losing the series' previous five meetings.

They'll play Thursday without 5-10 sophomore forward Abbey Howes, who dislocated a shoulder Nov. 29 vs. Wood Memorial. “It slipped out again at Mount Vernon and Abbey will undergo more examination,” said Thompson, whose sophomore daughter Katie, also 5-10, will again start in Howes' place.

Gibson Southern girls, despite a 6-1 record with five straight wins since a 45-42 overtime loss to unbeaten and 3A No. 2 Vincennes Lincoln, felt a drop this week.

No. 10 in last week's 3A poll, the Lady Titans fell from that spot despite beating Forest Park and Evansville North, the latter by 58-45 Monday night. They lead the “others receiving votes” group, meaning they were 11th in this week's balloting.

Mount Vernon girls, led by former boys' coach Steve Mitchell, will arrive with a 1-5 record, having lost five straight since a 50-39 opening win at Evansville Central. Their closest loss came Tuesday, 50-45 to Mater Dei.

Coach Mark Monroe's Lady Titans rode the first-quarter scoring of junior starter Sarah Thomas and junior sixthperson DanYelle Bigham to control at North. Senior Lauren Zeabart continues on a path that will reach 1,000 career points later this season.

Wood Memorial girls, even at 4-4 after Tuesday's 69-29 win over New Harmony, continue to prepare for Saturday's visit to Blue Chip Conference foe Barr-Reeve. The Lady Vikings share the Class A No. 1 ranking with yet another Blue Chip team, Vincennes Rivet.
